SimsiteŽ Composites Bearings
SimsiteŽ Guide Bearings Lead the Way...

Ask any engineer to describe the ideal material for bearings used in problem environments. What would he say? Most likely, he would tell you that the ideal material would have these characteristics:

  • be self-lubricating to prevent seizing or galling.
  • a composite that resists corrosion, erosion, and doesn't support electrolysis.
  • have a highly polished surface finish to reduce wear on the shaft and on the bearing itself.
  • it should be able to withstand high continuous running temperatures and extremely high flash temperatures.
  • have excellent mechanical strength to withstand loading and torque.
  • it should have rigidity to reduce redial movement, vibration, and noise.
  • accommodate precision machining for tight clearances and correct alignment.
  • lend itself easily to custom modification.

Then hand and engineer a piece of Simsite or, better still, show him a Simsite Bearing that has been functioning flawlessly for more than seven years in saltwater service.
You can achieve the ideal!

Simsite's Unique Qualities Work for You:
Machines are not always perfect. And when a lubricating system fails, damage to a rotating element can be extensive. That means lost time and money. But having Simsite Bearing working for you can save your equipment from significant damage. Simsite Bearings' have self-lubricating characteristics which prevent the bearings from galling or seizing on the shaft even when lubrication fails. This has saved the life of many rotating elements. Simsite Bearings are significantly superior to other guide bearings because they offer rigidity to the rotating element as well as an unusually low coefficient of friction. The superior lubricating qualities of graphite are imbedded throughout the Simsite Composite.

Simsite Bearings can take the heat...
Simsite Bearings can withstand extremely high flash temperatures up to 1000 degrees F., and continuous running temperatures from 300 degrees F. with standard Simsite and up to 400 degrees F. with a high-temperature grade of Simsite. Unlike plastic, elastomer, or rubber bearings, Simsite Bearings will not melt, get spongy or soft, or seize when exposed to high temperatures. Most bearing materials will not tolerate flash temperatures and will literally melt on the shaft in the event of any dry running.

Simsite Bearings have a remarkably low coefficient of friction...
Simsite Bearings have an extremely low coefficient of friction, because they have graphite embedded throughout the composite which acts as a lubricant. When lubricated by water, oil or grease, Simsite is ideal as a guide bearing, rudder, stern tube, stabilizing or oil-seal bearing. The chart at right compares the low friction characteristics of Simsite with other leading bearing material:

The Strength of Simsite Protects your Equipment
The unusually high mechanical strength of Simsite offers many advantages over conventional bearings. They are precision machined from a solid block of Simsite rather than poured or molded. Because its fibers are never chopped, cut or ground, the Simsite Bearings has greater shear, bound, flexural and tensile strength than other materials. Simsite's outstanding mechanical properties enable the bearing to withstand higher loads and torque requirement. Unlike bearings of carbon or pressed graphite, the Simsite Bearing will not crack or break under load. Compare Simsite's superior tensile strength with other bearing materials shown in the chart at left:

Electrolysis is Substantially Reduced with Simsite
Because Simsite is basically an inert composite, electrolysis is greatly reduced. Simsite Bearings seal against the casing or the housing preventing leakage and eliminating the damage of corrosion and erosion. This is critical because it insures that the bearings will be secured properly reducing the risk of damage to the entire rotating element.

Longer Life for the Complete Rotating Element
Because Simsite Bearings hold the shaft more securely than conventional bearings, radial movement in the shaft is reduced. This increase the life span of the entire rotating element. When you combine a Simsite Impeller and casing rings with a Simsite Guide Bearing the length-to-diameter (L/D) of the rotating element is reduced. The stability of the rotating element is therefore improved because of the lower mass. This lower mass (approximately 1/5 the weight of bronze) accounts for its excellent PV characteristics as is illustrated by the chart at left:

Cutting Nightmares down to size
Our chart and figures present a convincing case for Simsite Bearings, but reality presents an even better one. When a leading power utility lost cooling to the bearings on two cooling pumps because of a clogged line, the stage was set for an engineer's nightmare.
One of the pump had bronze guide bearings and a bronze impeller which failed totally. The bearings housings were severely damaged as well as the impeller and pump casing.

Downtime For Repair With Bronze: Several Month.
The other pump was identical in all respects but two: the SimsiteŽ components and the result. The pump continued to do its job of cooling the plant equipment without the benefit of cooling to its own Simsite Guide Bearing.
Did the SimsiteŽ Bearings emerge unscathed? No, the clearances were opened up a bit - but the impeller, the housings and the pump casing were in perfect condition.

Downtime For Repair With SimsiteŽ: One Day ( On-Site).
Analysis: the qualities of SimsiteŽ Bearing can make the difference between disaster and business as usual.
